Tree of Life by Duncan Grant

Title:      Tree of Life
              Rochiemurchus Textiles  x 4 panels.

Artist:
Duncan Grant, born at Rochiemurchus, 1885 - 1972
Studied at Slade School of Art, in France and Italy.
Friends with and influenced by Bussy, Matisse,  Bloomsburt Group and Omega Workshops.

Provenance:

Gifted by the Grants of Rochiemurchus to Rochiemurchus Church on completion of rebuilding in 1920.
When the church was renovated in 2000, textiles were sold.

Subject:
Textiles: 4 x panels
The subjects are made of  sack cloth and wool.  The rough fibre has been stretched over a frame and woven by hand into a cloth backing.  The decoration woven into it is made up of coloured wools, depicting the tree, flowers, leaves and birds.  Although on the same theme, each panel has a different subject.

Design and Influence:
The drawing of subject shows an influence from the Far East, the Buddhist Tree of Life from India and Famille Rose ceramics imported from China. The colourful birds are inspired from paintings by his mentor and friend, Bussy, while the flowers with large leaves are reminiscent of Matisse.

Restoration:
The textiles are in need of repair.  The backing has started to perish but the wool is perfect.

Summary:
The textiles should be saved.  If not, restored in fragment form as colourful works of art.
